Possible indications and problems

Blue smoke
Blue smoke is a sign of burning in the engine, this is often due to worn seals, piston rings, a faulty PCV valve (positive crankcase ventilation).

White smoke
White exhaust smoke could suggest a coolant leakage which means the coolant inside the engine, or condensation. This can be due to a blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head, a cracked engine block etc.

Black smoke
This usually indicates to an overly rich fuel mixture, or burning oil.

Excessive thick smoke
This can indicate to a possible blown head gasket, cracked cylinder head, engine damage etc. This can be a severe problem and if left untreated, this could lead to overheating and further engine damage and more costs if not addressed promptly.
